Iron infusion

Iron is essential for the transport of oxygen from our lungs to the body tissues. Without enough iron, our body cannot produce enough of haemoglobin in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen.

As a result, iron deficiency anaemia may leave you with tiredness and shortness of breath.

While there are numerous causes for iron deficiency, the common ones include:

  • Increase loss of iron,
  • Inadequate intake of iron or
  • Trouble in the gut which makes iron absorption inefficient.

Intravenous iron infusion if administered appropriately can be an excellent option for those suffering from

  • Iron deficiency or
  • Those with low iron but cannot tolerate oral tablets.
  • Those in need of rapid increase in Iron level to avoid important complication or a blood transfusion (for example before or after major surgery, significant anaemia late in pregnancy or after delivery)
  • Non responsiveness to oral iron and
  • Chronic Kidney or Heart failure-prior in-depth assessment is needed before any infusion at Zenith Medical Centre.

There has been reports of side effects. These may include

  • Headaches, feeling sick-especially if you have not eaten prior to receiving the infusion.
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Altered taste which is transient.
  • Shortness of breath
  • Itch or rash
  • Increased or decreased blood pressure or heart rate
  • Pain at the intravenous infusion site
  • Skin stain-on rare occasion this can happen but clears afterwards.

Severe side effects are very rare but be sure, we are there to look after you.

Benefits:

An iron infusion is a way to increase the body’s iron levels quickly.

  • It’s a more immediate treatment than supplements or dietary changes.
  • Helpful in situations where anaemia is severe.
  • Increased energy and easier breathing. You should start feeling these benefits a few weeks after your final infusion treatment.

May be all you need to overcome that fatigue is iron. Speak to us today for an assessment to see if iron infusion may be appropriate for you.

Come in and have a check-up and our doctors will give you professional advice.
